Moraga, CA- Saint Mary's men's soccer head coach Adam Cooper was tabbed as the head coach of the U.S. Maccabi junior boy's squad. Cooper will head a team of 14 and 15 year olds for the Maccabi Pan-American games in Argentina.
"I am really excited to be the head coach for the Pan-American games," Cooper said. "Its an honor to represent USA and to try and bring home a gold medal."
Cooper will lead the team in December after the Saint Mary's 2007 season. The 11th Maccabi Pan-American games will take place on December 26 through January 2nd. The games will be based in Buenos Aires. 17 teams including the USA are considering participation in the games.
Cooper will join Minnesota Thunder assistant coach Tod Herskovitz in Florida on Dec. 18 for a mini camp before departure to Argentina. The Thunder play in the USL First Division.
"I'm looking forward to working with Tod (Herskovitz)," Cooper said. "He brings impressive credentials which includes coaching in the pro ranks. It will be nice having him join me on the sidelines in Argentina."
Cooper has extensive experience with the Maccabi games. Before coming to Saint Mary's he led the JCC Los Angeles squad to six consecutive undefeated seasons which included six gold medals at the games.
As a player, Cooper played for the L.A. Delegation in the JCC games. He led the squad in 1992 in Baltimore and 1994 in Cleveland where he was named the games MVP both times. In Cleveland he led the Delegation to a bronze medal.
Since 1948, Maccabi USA/Sports for Israel has sought to enrich the lives of Jewish youth in the United States, Israel and throughout the Diaspora through athletic, cultural and educational programs. The organization is the sponsor of the U.S. Team to the World Maccabiah Games in Israel. It also sponsors U.S. participation in Maccabi competitions in Pan America, Europe and Australia and supports Jewish youth through the JCC Maccabi Games.
