Men's Soccer Reports to Training Camp

Aug. 9, 2006

Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's men's soccer team reports to training camp today. The 13 returning players and 10 newcomers begin training under newly appointed head coach Adam Cooper.

Cooper had been with the program for five years as an assistant coach. When former coach Steve Rammel stepped down as head coach, Saint Mary's College took the opportunity to hire Cooper to the head coach job. Carl Edwards, who worked as an assistant with Cooper, was named Associate Head Coach. Cooper and Edwards then brought in Ryan Edwards and Kurt Schmid as Assistant Coaches.

Among the top returnees for the Gaels are senior Matthew Fitzgerald and sophomore Carlos Diaz. Along with both receiving conference honors, the two had a hand in 20 of the 28 Gael goals last season.

On the defensive end, the Gaels return all-conference players Alex Christlieb and Brain Mason. Christlieb, a senior defender, will be a main staple of the Gael Defense. Mason, a junior Goalkeeper, looks to have another strong year in the net after posting 94 saves in the 2005 season.

Cooper is excited to have his players back in camp. "The guys have been working hard and everyone is itching to get back into the swing of things. We're all excited to be in camp and looking forward to the start of the season."

The Men's Soccer team will finish camp in time to compete in the Wright State Tournament on August 25-27 from Dayton, OH. The Gaels will face Butler University on Friday, August 25 at 3:00 p.m. PST. The Gaels return to action on Sunday, August 27 when they match up with Wright State at 1:00 p.m. PST.
