Sept. 3, 2007
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University senior defender Jamil Roberts was named West Coast Conference Player of the Week on Monday after an outstanding opening weekend to the 2007 season. Roberts scored a goal and notched two assists to help SCU get off to a 2-0-0 start with wins over Alabama A&M and Vermont.
Roberts, a native of Fremont, Calif., got the weekend off to a great start, as he scored the Broncos' first goal on Aug. 31 against Alabama A&M. After receiving the ball from Brian Martin, Roberts poked a shot past A&M goalkeeper Paul Musoke to get SCU out to a 1-0 lead. He later picked up assists on goals by Jeff Cosgriff and Stephen McCarthy. McCarthy's goal with under 10 minutes to play turned out to be the game-winner in a 3-2 victory.
The Broncos captain followed that performance up with another solid effort against Vermont on Sept. 2. With Roberts leading the way, SCU allowed just four shots in shutting out the visiting Catamounts 2-0 at Buck Shaw Stadium. He also cleared a shot off the goal-line early in the second half to preserve the shutout.
Roberts and the Broncos head to the East Coast for their next two matches to face Brown and Boston University in the Brown adidas Classic on Sept. 7 and 9 in Providence, R.I. SCU takes on Brown on Friday, Sept. 7 at 4:30 p.m. PT and then plays Boston University at 9 a.m. PT on Sunday, Sept. 9. Stay connected to SantaClaraBroncos.com for full coverage of both matches.
