SAN JOSE, Calif.
Two first half goals from senior captain Peter Lowry led the No. 7 Santa Clara Broncos to a 2-0 win over San Jose State on Thursday night at Spartan Stadium. With the win, SCU improved to 4-1-2 on the season. Lowry now has four goals on the season. Freshman Kevin Klasila made four saves to earn his second straight shutout in the net for the Broncos.
The Broncos got off to a quick start with Lowry depositing his third goal of the season just over a minute into the game. Junior Jide Ogunbiyi got the play started by holding off two defenders at the top of the box and finding senior Matt Hatzke on the left wing. Hatzke sent a low ball to Lowry, who one-timed a shot past Spartans goalkeeper Richard Mann to put SCU up 1-0.
Five minutes after the Broncos goal, Klasila made a big play at the opposite end to keep SCU in the lead. A long ball over the top sent San Jose State's Ismael Ibarra in alone, but Klasila burst off his line to send the bouncing ball out of danger.
Ogunbiyi and Lowry connected in the 11th minute as SCU looked for a second goal. Lowry slipped a through ball past two Spartans defenders for Ogunbiyi who had only Mann to beat. He fired a shot near post, but Mann got down low to make the save and knock it out for a corner kick.
Lowry netted his second of the game 20 minutes into match after another cross from the left wing. Redshirt freshman Kellen Wantulok controlled a ball on the left wing and drove a cross to the back post. Lowry shook free of his defender and buried his 18th career goal to make it 2-0.
Klasila shut down the Spartans the rest of the half by cutting off a number of crosses and making a couple of excellent saves. His best save came in the waning moments of the first half. After a foul at the top of the box, San Jose State's Junior Burgos curled a shot over the wall to near post. Klasila made a fully-extended diving save with his right hand to keep the Spartans off the scoreboard.
The Broncos had a flurry of chances early in the second half, two from Ogunbiyi and one from Lowry. Ogunbiyi blasted a shot just past the near post less than five minutes into the half and Lowry followed up minutes later with a blast off the post in a bid for his hat trick. Ogunbiyi got free in the box in the 53rd minute, but he again hit his shot wide of the near post.
Klasila kept his shutout intact with a brilliant stop 20 minutes into the second half. The Spartans Ed Murillo-Jimenez got the ball at the top of the box and blasted a shot that deflected off a defender and was headed toward the upper part of the net. Klasila reacted quickly and tipped the shot over the bar.
Santa Clara now prepares for one of the biggest matches of the season this weekend, as the Broncos host the UCLA Bruins. The match kicks off at 7 p.m. PT at Buck Shaw Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 22.
