Moraga, CA- Saint Mary's senior defender Alex Christlieb (Ashland, OR) garnered quite the attention this week after leading the Gaels to a 1-0 victory over former No. 11-ranked San Francisco. The senior captain was named the West Coast Conference Co-Player of the Week and to the College Soccer News, Soccer America and Top Drawer Soccer Teams of the week. Christlieb became the first Gaels to ever receive all four honors in the same week.
All four accolades are a career first for the senior. Against USF, Christlieb made sure the Gaels got on the right foot to start West Coast Conference play. The Ashland, OR native recorded the game-winner against back-to-back WCC champion and then No.11-ranked San Francisco Friday afternoon. Christlieb knocked home a cross from Mark Araujo who was set up by Ryan Corriveau in the 20th minute. The goal marks the second on the season for the 2005 WCC honorable mention selection.
On the defensive side of the ball, the senior captain helped the stingy Gael defense blank the Dons. The shut out marks only the second time on the year that USF was shut out.
SMC will return to action on Friday, September 29 to face no. 10-ranked San Diego. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. from Saint Mary's Stadium.
