San Bruno, CA-Saint Mary's freshman midfielder Dylan Leslie (Lancaster, CA) was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week for his efforts against No. 10-ranked San Diego and Loyola Marymount. The accolade is a career first for the freshman and marks the second consecutive week that a Gael has nabbed the honor. Senior Alex Christlieb earned the accolade last week.
Leslie played beyond his years when he led SMC to a 4-2 victory over then ranked No. 10 San Diego. The newcomer tallied a hat trick against a USD team that had only allowed three goals all season. The win over the Toreros mark the second time in as many games that the Gaels have downed a ranked opponent. The previous game, SMC beat then No. 11-ranked USF 1-0.
Leslie converted a penalty kick in the 18th minute and then added a goal in the 30th minute on a one-timer from senior Matthew Fitzgerald. In the second half, Leslie was not done, as he capped off the hat trick in 60th minute on a header off a Carlos Diaz corner kick.
After the three-game homestand to open West Coast Conference play, the Gaels remain atop the standings with a 2-0-1 record. It is the first time since 1999 that the Gaels have opened conference action undefeated in their first three games.
Saint Mary's will continue WCC action with a road swing in the Pacific Northwest. The Gaels will face the Portland Pilots on Friday, October 6 and then continue north to play the Gonzaga Bulldogs on October 8 at 1 p.m.
