INDIANAPOLIS-- The Saint Mary's men's soccer team will travel to CSU Bakersfield on Thursday, November 17 to take on the Roadrunners at 7:00 p.m. in NCAA Tournament First-Round action.
The winner of the Gaels/Roadrunners match-up will move on to face UC Irvine in Irvine on Sunday, November 20 at 6:00 p.m.
Saint Mary's enters the NCAA Tournament with an 8-6-5 record, going 7-3-2 in West Coast Conference action. Head coach Adam Cooper set up a highly competitive non-conference schedule which prepared the Gaels for WCC play.
The Gaels and Roadrunners met earlier this season on September 18 in Bakersfield. The teams battled to a scoreless draw in 110 minutes of action. The match statistics across the board were fairly even with the Gaels holding a 14-10 advantage in shots. Corner kicks were tied at 4-4 and CSUB had seven saves while SMC had two saves.
Saint Mary's has been ranked has high as 5th in the nation in goals allowed and defense. The Gaels were ranked 20th in the nation in shutout percentage before last week's back-to-back shutouts to claim the conference title.
This is the second-ever NCAA Tournament appearance by the Gaels (2009 at-large) after capturing their first-ever WCC title on Sunday.
