Saint Mary's Prepares to take on No. 1 North Carolina in NCAA Elite Eight

SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- Saint Mary's men's soccer defeated Brown 3-2 in overtime on Sunday, November 27 in the NCAA Sweet 16. The Gaels will face no. 1 North Carolina on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. PT in Chapel Hill, N.C.

QUICK HITS

  • Saint Mary's is on to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament afterwinning 3-2 in overtime at Brown last Sunday in Providence, R.I. The Gaels came back from a 2-1 deficit. Junior Trevor Newquist scored two goals for SMC, including the game-winner in the 98th minute.

  • For his efforts last week, Newquist was named the Top Drawer Soccer National Player of the Week. He and teammate senior Tom Mohoric earned spots on the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week.

  • Saint Mary's advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament after winning 2-1 in double overtime at No. 7 UC Irvine on Sunday, November 20. Sophomore Justin Howard scored the game-winner in the 103rd minute.

  • Saint Mary's defeated No. 25 Cal State Bakersfield 1-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday, November 17. In the 41st minute, senior Tom Mohoric headed in a free-kick from redshirt-senior Julian Godinez and the Gaels held off the Roadrunners for the rest of the match.

  • Saint Mary's Adam Cooper was voted WCC Coach of the Year by his peers. This is Coach Cooper's second Coach of the Year honor. (2009).

  • San Francisco junior Brendan Roslund is the winner of the first-ever WCC Goalkeeper of the Year award.
