(San Francisco) - USF Athletics lost a very special member of its family with the passing of Rouben Victor Chakalian, '56. Chakalian fought a rare and aggressive lymphoma of the brain with courage and dignity before passing away December 2, 2007. He was 71.
Chakalian is survived by his wife of 51 years, Tania, and five daughters - Angie, Annette, Nina, Vicki, and Rosie and 11 grandchildren - Jackie, Andy, Katie, Kelly, Samantha, Zachary, Stephen, Nicki, Valerie, Brigitte, and Dominic.
Chakalian was born December 23, 1935 in Shanghai, China and immigrated to America with his family. A 1956 graduate of the University of San Francisco, Chakalian married Tania later the same year. Chakalian served as an officer in the US Army and spent nearly two decades in Europe during a long and distinguished career in international business.
During his retirement, Chakalian stayed active as a frequent guest speaker on international business at various universities; he was a 4th degree Knight of Columbus, an American Legionnaire, and was involved in numerous charitable organizations. A fixture at USF sporting events, in particular Dons soccer, Chakalian supported the Green and Gold on and off the field.
