Lions Blank Air Force in 7-0 Season Opener

Jan. 15, 2007

LOS ANGELES - Loyola Marymount opened the season with an exclamation point Monday, sweeping Air Force 7-0 at the LMU Tennis Center. In addition to the impressive opening day for the Lions, Monday marked the first day of play with the new LMU scoreboard, a facility feature that was enjoyed by all fans.

The young Lions started by sweeping the doubles matches from the Falcons to take a1-0 lead. They never looked back, defeating Air Force instraight sets at every position in singles play.

"The guys played pretty solid from top to bottom today," LMU Head Coach Nik DeVore said. "At certain positions, it certainly could have been better, but overall we are pleased with the performances. It was pretty apparent early on that we were the more talented team, which oftenmakes it difficult to maintain focus and take care of business, so under thecircumstances, we did what we needed to do."

Among the eight Lion newcomers, freshman Nikola Petrov and junior transfer Sam Tadevosian posted especially impressive opening day performances. Petrov defeated Air Force's Brett Rodgers 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, while Tadevosian defeated Greg Ferry 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5. He also teamed with newcomer Javier Royo for an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles.

"I was particularly pleased withthe performance of Nikola Petrov," DeVore said. "Nikola has been working hard to improvehis game, and it's really starting to pay off. He is playing with moreconfidence than ever right now. I also felt that Sam Tadevosian played witha lot of poise and confidence today. Sam is a pretty intelligent player whoknows how to adapt his game to different styles. As a result he made hismatch look very routine."

Next up for the Lions is nationally-ranked USC Saturday at 9:00 a.m. "Despite the good things that happened today, we have got to step things up for our next opponent," DeVore said. "They are a perennial powerhouse team, so our levelof play will need to go way up this weekend. Our guys are excited about theopportunity, so I am confident that we will be ready for the challenge."
