Malibu, Calif. - The No. 5 Pepperdine men's tennis team grabbed its first win of the season after cruising to a 7-0 victory over No. 56 Northwestern (2-2) on Sunday afternoon at the Combe Tennis Center in Evanston, Ill.
After falling to No. 5 Illinois on Friday, the Waves went 1-1 on the road to kick off the 2007 season.
The Waves found themselves down in doubles after the Wildcats' duo of Christian Tempke and Juan Gomez defeated James Lemke and Bassam Beidas, 8-3 at No. 3 doubles. But Pepperdine quickly evened the score at No. 1 when Omar Altmann and Richard Johnson upset Northwestern's 27th-ranked doubles team of Matt Christian and Willy Lock 8-2, leaving No. 2 doubles to determine the point. The Wildcats retaliated after being down 5-1, but Andre Begemann and Mahmoud Kamel were able to close out the 8-6 win over Marc Dwyer and Alex Sanborn.
Lemke was the first singles player to finish as he put away Gomez 6-3, 6-1 at court four and Altmann followed with a 6-1, 6-3 defeat at No. 5 over Dwyer to put the Waves up 3-0. No. 33 Begemann clinched the match with a win at No. 1 singles, defeating Lock 6-4, 6-4.
The final three matches all took three sets to decide, but Pepperdine had no problems adding three more victories for the shutout. Despite falling in a first-set tiebreaker to Tempke, Johnson was able to rebound with a 6-1 win in the second set and won 15-13 in the tiebreaker. At No. 6, Kamel overcame a 6-3 loss in the first set to defeat Sanborn 6-0, 6-4, while Beidas defeated Christian, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (2).
The Waves return to Malibu for their home opener on Sunday, Jan. 28 when they host Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara in a double-header at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. Action starts at 9:30 a.m. with Cal Poly taking on the Waves, which will be followed by a 1 p.m. match against the Gauchos.
