Tucson, AZ- The Saint Mary's men's tennis team opened its 2007 non-conference slate with a convincing 4-0 victory over Northern Arizona in a shortened match Sunday from the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center. In cold, wet conditions, the doubles were unable to be played but the Gaels took care of the Lumberjacks by sweeping the singles matches.
At the number one position, Saint Mary's newcomer Joel Kusnierz defeated Gareth Giblot-Ducray in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-0. Kusnierz's win enabled the Gaels to secure the victory as the match was quickly called due to the inclement weather.
Saint Mary's senior Andre Sion showed no ill-effects of over a year away from the court as he defeated Fernando Freitas in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
Saint Mary's sophomore Achim Christner had his match suspended due to the elements. The match ended with Christner holding a 6-2, 4-6, 4-3 advantage at the number three position. Andrea Zannoni was in a close match with Bradley Bristow before the match was called and unable to finish. In his first action as a Gael, Zannoni was in a dead-heat trailing 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 3-4.
Saint Mary's will continue action today against the host No. 48-ranked University of Arizona. First serve is slated for 2 p.m. from the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
