Zags Fall In Spring Opener

EUGENE, Ore. - The Gonzaga University men's tennis team opened the spring season Friday, falling 7-0 to the University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore.

Oregon jumped out to an early lead, earning the closely contested doubles point. The Ducks' Geoff Embry and Alexander Cornelissen earned a win at the No. 1 with an 8-3 victory over the Bulldogs' Zach Radetzky and Roman Dojcak. At the No. 2 position, Gonzaga's Charles Adams and Marco Antonio Pineda were edged out by Oregon's Ric Mortera and Marcos Verdasco, 9-1. Bryce Cooper and Cooper Fratt forced a tiebreaker at No. 3, but were unable to earn the win, falling 8-7 (4) to Francisco Gallardo and Mike Myrhed.

In singles play, Cooper fell to Verdasco at No. 1, forcing tiebreakers for each set, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5). Brett Womack was unable to overcome Cornelissen at No. 2, 6-2, 6-2. At the No. 3 position, Roman Dojcak fell to Mortera, 6-0, 6-2. Playing in the No. 4 position for Gonzaga was Fratt. Fratt fell to Gallardo, 6-2, 4-6 (8). Pineda fell at No. 5 to Myrhed, 6-1, 6-2 and Radetzky fell in the No. 6 position to Pickard, 6-0, 6-4 to finish round out play for the day.

The Zags will be back in action Saturday, when they travel to West Coast Conference foe University of Portland. The match is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m.
