Feb. 14, 2007

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Bronco men's tennis team pulled out another 4-3 thriller on Wednesday afternoon as No. 73 Santa Clara (5-4) defeated No. 73 Hawai'i (1-2) at the Degheri Tennis Center. Bobby Rasmussen played the role of hero this time, fighting off three match points in the third set before winning 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 to clinch the match. Jay Wong and Blane Shields also won their singles matches and SCU swept all three doubles positions to earn the doubles point.

No. 1 doubles team Kevin McQuaid and Blane Shields won their second straight match, while No. 3 Brian Brogan and Robert Gallman also picked up a win. Rasmussen teamed with Jan Macek to complete the doubles sweep, winning their 10th match of the spring in the process against only two losses.

Four out of the six singles matches went the distance in an action-packed afternoon on the campus of Santa Clara. Shields, playing his second match at No. 6, won his match handily 6-1, 6-3 over Chad Faulk, followed by No. 3 Wong beating Derrick Lajola 6-3, 6-3 to put SCU up 3-0.

The final four matches could have gone either way. At No. 1, Macek went up a set, before dropping the final two to Sascha Heinemann to cut SCU's lead to 3-1. At side by side courts Rasmussen and Robert Gallman were both involved in tight third sets. Rasmussen got down 5-4 and 40-0 with Hawai'i's Jeff Fitch serving. However, Rasmussen dug deep and staved off three straight match points before evening the match at 5-5. Rasmussen then won his service game and broke Fitch at 6-5 to close out the match 7-5. The win clinched the victory for the Broncos. Soon after Rasmussen's win, Gallman fell 6-3 in the third set to Chad Faulk, but the Broncos had already sealed the win.

Brian Brogan faced No. 37 Andreas Weber at No. 2 singles in another hotly contested match. After falling 6-1 in the first set, Brogan came back to win the second set 6-3. In the super tiebreaker that followed, Weber had just enough to defeat Brogan 10-6.
