MALIBU, Calif. - In a rematch of last season's title match of the ITA Indoors and NCAA Championships, the ninth-seeded and 10th-ranked Pepperdine men's tennis team fell to top-seeded and No. 1 Georgia, 4-0, in the quarterfinals of this year's ITA National Team Indoor Championships at the Midtown Tennis Center in Chicago, Ill.
The Bulldogs defeated the Waves by the same score at the Indoors in 2006, but Pepperdine avenged the loss in the NCAA final and defeated Georgia 4-2.
In three tight doubles matches, Georgia came up with the point in the end, getting two 8-6 victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 spot. The top-ranked Bulldog duo of John Isner and Luis Flores defeated Omar Altmann and Richard Johnson, while Georgia's freshman duo of Jamie Hunt and Nate Schnugg bested Pepperdine's freshman duo of Bassam Beidas and James Lemke.
Georgia (6-0) quickly took control in singles winning three straight matches for the win. At No. 5, Schnugg defeated Altmann 6-1, 7-5, while Hunt beat Kamel 6-1, 6-3. The 22nd-ranked Travis Helgeson clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Lemke at No. 3.
When play was abandoned second-ranked John Isner took the first set 6-4 over No. 33 Begemann, but the junior was leading 5-4 in the second set. Flores was leading Johnson 6-2, 4-3, while Beidas was about to close out a win over No. 65 Matic Omerzel as he led 6-2, 5-2.
The Waves (7-2) continue action away from Malibu with a challenging three-match road trip beginning Feb. 23. Pepperdine will face No. 8 Virginia, No. 24 Wake Forest and local rival and fourth-ranked UCLA.
