IRVINE, Calif. - Loyola Marymount men's tennis defeated 75th-ranked UC Irvine 4-3 Friday afternoon. The Lions (2-7) won two of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point before five of six singles matches went to three sets in the non-conference thriller at Anteater Tennis Stadium.
After the doubles point victory, the Lions had a 1-0 lead on the Anteaters (3-3) heading into singles play. They then got big singles wins from Jacek Twarowski, Sam Tadevosian, and Nikola Petrov to seal the 4-3 road victory.
"This was just what the doctor ordered," LMU Head Coach Nik DeVore said. "From top to bottom, the guys competedvery well today. There is no way we would have the record that we currentlyhave if all of our players would have competed like this from the beginning. This was a very hard fought match, with five of six singles matches goingthree sets. Nikola Petrov, Jacek Twarowski and Sam Tadevosian really came through for us today, andall three of them have been struggling to find their confidence this spring. To beat a nationally ranked team on the road at this point in our seasonshould really help our confidence for the upcoming matches."
With the score tied 3-3 in singles play, Petrov clinched the 4-3 win for LMU with a three-set victory at the No. 2 spot. Petrov needed sixmatch points for the victory, but was able to close out the match forthe Lions 6-7, 6-4, 6-2.
"This match should really pump Nikola up," DeVore said. "He beat a player who wasranked top-100 in the Division I rankings last year. Nikola has the talent, he just hasn't been able to put everything together up to this point. It was also nice to see Jacek an Sam play some solid singles, and tosee Nick Perez and Matt Phillips start to get things going in doubles. Nick andMatt have won three straight matches for us and clinched the all-importantdoubles point for us."
The Lions continue their Big West Conference road swing next Tuesday when they take on UC Riverside at 2:00 p.m.
