Malibu, Calif. - The No. 2 Pepperdine men's tennis team handed No. 7 Baylor a 4-3 defeat on Monday afternoon at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, Calif. With the win, the Waves moved to 16-1 on the season, while the Bears dropped to 10-4 on the season.
Pepperdine clinched the doubles point after winning at courts one and three. Richard Johnson and Omar Altmann came from behind to defeat Will Ward and Matt Brown 8-6 at No. 3, while No. 1 Scott Doerner and Andre Begemann defeated No. 19 Jon Reckewey and Matija Zgaga 8-6 to put the Waves up 1-0.
In singles, No. 17 Scott Doerner easily defeated No. 5 Lars Poerschke 6-0, 6-1 at court one. Altmann followed with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Reckewey at No. 6 to boost the Waves' lead to 3-0. The Bears began to fight back winning at courts four and five. No. 48 Zgaga forced No. 20 Pedro Rico to a third set and defeated the Wave 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. No. 62 Ivor Lovrak clinched the match at court three as he defeated Ward 7-6 (3) 2-6, 6-1 to remain undefeated in singles with a 13-0 record.
The Waves are back in action on Saturday, March 18 when they play No. 63 Pacific at 10 a.m. followed by a 2:30 p.m. match against Princeton.
