Lions Top Princeton 5-2

March 20, 2006

Los Angeles, Calif. - After a 5-2 win over Princeton on Monday, Loyola Marymount men's tennis has now won six of its last seven matches. The season turnaround comes after LMU started its 2006 campaign 1-6. With the win Monday, the Lions even things up at 7-7.

"Our guys have really picked up the intensity," LMU Head Coach Nik DeVore said. "We lost a hard fought 4-3 match to Princeton last year, and were swept in the doubles, so this was a very sweet win for us."

The Lions opened Monday's match with solid doubles play, sweeping all three doubles matches to secure the first point.

"We definitely turned things around this year against Princeton," DeVore said. "We played solid at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, but I was most impressed with the resolve our No. 2 doubles team of Carlos Malet and Matt Phillips showed. They have been struggling with their confidence as of late, so this was a big win for them against a pretty tough team."

In singles play, Nico Terrien and Mike Wojnarowicz both avenged losses from their 2005 outings against Princeton. Terrien defeated Sratha Saengsuwarn 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, while Wojnarowicz defeated Darius Craton 4-6, 7-6, 10-7 at the No. 2 spot. Terrien has now won six of his last seven singles matches.

"Nico and Mike lost in straight sets to these same two players last year," DeVore said. "The turn around by both of them was impressive today."

Reyniere Roxas and Matt Phillips also played solid tennis Monday, defeating their opponents in straight sets at the No. 3 and No. 5 spots.

There was a lot of positive energy out there today," DeVore said. "When the match got tight in the singles play, our guys just proved that they wanted it more. Hopefully we can continue to compete like this when we face 75th-ranked Dartmouth on Wednesday."

Wednesday's match against Dartmouth will mark the completion of LMU's nine-match homestand. The Lions will then travel to Utah to face the Utes, Utah State, and Weber State this weekend.
