Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's men's tennis team won today's competition against Northern Colorado by a score of 7-0. The Gaels ended a four game skid earlier today and improved to 7-8 on the season.
This brings us to the most exciting match of the day. The Gaels had already won the doubles point when seniors Dan Anderson and Thomas Dawson-Roberts were down 4-7. The Gael seniors had an uphill battle if they wanted to win their match as Northern Colorado only need one game to take it down. Anderson and Dawson-Roberts responded to the challenge and won the next five straight games to win the match by a final score of 9-7.
The Gaels swept the singles matches. Platonov won his in straight sets, winning 6-0, 6-1. Achim Christner won his match 6-2, 6-0. Zannoni finished next for the Gaels, also taking his match in straight sets 6-3, 6-1. Ozpinar won his match 6-1, 7-5.
Sion finished fifth for the Gaels. Sion had won the first set and was in the second set when the match got heated. With the match 1-2 in favor of Northern Colorado's Vinnie Fullico, Sion really caught fire and won the next five straight games to take the match 6-2, 6-2.
After Anderson had made a thrilling comeback with doubles partner Dawson-Roberts, he found himself in a similar situation. Anderson lost the first set and was down in the second. He came back to win the second set and force a tiebreaker. Anderson won the tiebreaker 10-7 and took the match.
After Anderson took down his singles match the Gaels had the final score of 7-0. The Gaels return to action on Sunday, March 24 when they hit the road to face off against Fresno State.
