Dartmouth Edges LMU 4-3

March 21, 2007

LOS ANGELES - A contest between Dartmouth and Loyola Marymount University came down to the very last singles match, as the Big Green edged the Lions 4-3 Wednesday at the LMU Tennis Center. For the Lions (4-11, 1-2 WCC), 17 of their 23 scheduled spring matches are against teams that appeared in the national rankings this season, and today was no different as Dartmouth (12-3) was ranked as recently as last week.

Five of six singles matches went to the full three sets, but LMU could not pull it out in the end, despite rallying back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the match at 3-3.

"This was a tough loss for us," LMU Head Coach Nik DeVore said. "Nico, Sam, and Jacek pulled out three highly-contested matches for us at No.1, No.2, and No.3 to tie the score at 3-3. Sam inparticular played with a lot of confidence today. He had to overcome atough opponent and a lot of adversity in order to win that match. Sam isreally starting to pick up his game."

The match ultimately came down to freshmanJavier Royo at No.6. He put up an impressive fight, but could not hold on, falling 5-7, 6-2,6-3 to Dartmouth's Ari Gayer.

"What really killed us was the doubles," DeVore said. "Wegot off to a rough start at No.1 and No.2 and just couldn't recover. We then hadto win four of six singles matches in order to win the match, but fell justshort. It doesn't get any easier for us. "

Next up for the Lions is Cal Poly at 2:00 p.m. onSunday at the LMU Tennis Center. Like today's opponent Dartmouth, Cal Poly was in the national rankings earlier this season, and has beenplaying well this spring. Sunday's match will be the second match in a Sunday doubleheader at the LMU Tennis Center. The Lion women will take to the courts first, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
