SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego Toreros claimed city bragging rights Saturday at USD's West Tennis Courts with a 5-2 victory over the San Diego State Aztecs. The Toreros now stand at an impressive 10-5 on the season and are currently ranked 36th nationally.
USD clinched the doubles point with victories in two of three spots. The No. 19 duo of Pierrick Ysern and Thomas Liversage took an 8-5 win over their opponent while Mirza Koristovic and Jonas Mouly clinched a narrow 9-8 win victory at No. 2 doubles.
In singles, 53rd ranked senior Pierrick Ysern downed Markus Dickhardt in the first set by a score of 6-1. Ysern finished off the win with a hard-fought 7-6 second set. At No. 2 singles, Oscar Plotnick easily handled the Aztecs' Benedikt Stronkt, defeating him 6-3 in both sets. Sophomore Thomas Liversage likewise rolled by his opponent, Stephan Timu of SDSU, by scores of 6-1 and 6-0. Ryo Sekiguchi took a 6-4 first set victory over Anthony Gomez but lost his second set by a score of 6-1. He would come back however and clinch the third set, and the victory, with a 6-2 win over Gomez.
The Toreros next host Harvard in a 1:30 p.m. match on Monday, March 27.
