Los Angeles, Calif. - In a match that was just points from turning either way, Loyola Marymount dropped a tough West Coast Conference battle 5-2 to Santa Clara Saturday at the LMU Tennis Center.
The doubles point came down to the No.2 spot after the teams split at the first and third spots. Carlos Malet and Matt Phillips were down the entire match, but fought back to tie the score at 7-7. Santa Clara was then able to win the next two games to win the match and securethe doubles point.
In singles play, the Broncos went on to secure straight-set wins at spots No.1,No.2, and No.5.
Senior Carlos Malet was the last one to finish, falling in a tough three set battle to Santa Clara's AJ Kerin at No.6 3-6, 6-1, 7-6.
"I'm pretty proud of the way we foughttoday," LMU Head Coach Nik DeVore said. "A few of our guys just didn't have there top games today, otherwiseI think the end result might have been different. It's a minor setbackthough. We have been playing pretty confidently as of late, so there is noreason to panic."
The Lions will remain at home to host Wofford on Wednesday beforetraveling to the Bay Area for weekend matches against UC Davis, Sacramento Stateand WCC opponent Saint Mary's.
