Malibu, Calif. - After a sweep of the doubles, the No. 2 Pepperdine men's tennis team defeated Santa Clara 6-1 in a West Coast Conference match on Sunday afternoon at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, Calif. With the win, the Waves moved to 23-1 on the season, while the Broncos fell to 10-10.
The No. 1 nationally-ranked duo of Scott Doerner and Andre Begemann defeated Kevin McQuaid and Blane Shields 8-2, while Pedro Rico teamed up with Kevin Borzenski to put away Jan Macek and Bobby Rasmussen 8-4 on court two. Richard Johnson and Omar Altmann picked up their second win of the weekend with an 8-2 victory over Brian Brogan and Tommy Hicks.
At the No. 1 singles position, No. 4 Doerner easily defeated Macek 6-2, 6-0, while No. 19 Rico beat Brian Brogan 6-2, 6-3. Begemann won his sixth consecutive match with a 6-1, 7-6 win over McQuaid and at No. 4, Johnson put away Rasmussen in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Hicks forced Altmann to a third set, but the Wave bounced back in the third set to record his ninth straight victory with a 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 win.
The Broncos lone point came at court six where AJ Kerin defeated Borzenski in three sets.
The Waves are back in action on Wednesday, April 5 when they host Hawaii at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, Calif. Action kicks off at 1 p.m.
