Malibu, Calif. - The strong winds hitting the Malibu campus were not an issue for the No. 2 Pepperdine men's tennis team as it easily defeated No. 68 Hawaii 6-0 on Wednesday afternoon at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, Calif. With the win, the Waves improved to 24-1 on the season, while the Rainbow Warriors dropped to 9-5 on the season.
Singles were played first due to inclement weather in the forecast. No. 6 senior Scott Doerner beat Sascha Heinemann 6-2, 6-0 on court one, while No. 54 Ivor Lovrak defeated Ryan Sceats 6-1, 6-2, at court three, moving the senior to 17-0 overall. At position four, sophomore Andre Begemann put away Chad Faulk 7-5, 6-1, while junior Richard Johnson handed Jarrod Diepraam a 6-0, 6-3 defeat at No. 5. Freshman Omar Altmann picked up his 10th consecutive win as he defeated Jeff Fitch 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6. Byron Weinberg forced No. 25 Pedro Rico to a third set and just when it looked like Hawaii would get a point on the board, the Wave fought back to defeat Weinberg in the tiebreaker.
Pepperdine heads to San Diego on Saturday, April 8 to face San Diego State in a 1 p.m. match before concluding its home schedule on Sunday, April 9 when it faces Fresno State at 1 p.m.
