San Francisco, CA - The Saint Mary's men's tennis team played against Bay Area rival San Francisco earlier today. The Gaels dropped the road match 4-3. The competition was very close and the Gael squad fought hard; however, they came up short. Saint Mary's is now 1-1 against USF this year. They defeated the Dons by the same 4-3 score earlier this year.
The match got underway with doubles. Yury Platonov and Joel Kusnierz teamed up and won their doubles match 8-4. Adam Fauvre and Andre Sion dropped their match 8-6. With the doubles point on the line Andrea Zannoni and Alp Ozpinar were in a battle with USF's Thong Tu and Mitch Del Rosario. Tu and Del Rosario got the better of this close match as they won 9-8 and gave USF the 1-0 lead.
Kusnierz fell in a close match 7-6, 6-4. Sion then defeated his opponent 6-4, 6-3. Sion has won four of his last five singles matches. Zannoni won his match in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.
Achim Christner won his first set 1-6. The next two sets were very close but Christner dropped the next two sets 6-4, 6-4. Platonov also won his first set. He was very close to pulling off the match but fell in the remaining two sets. The final score of the match was 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
With the dons up 4-2, Fauvre gave the Gaels their third point of the match. He won the first set 6-4, but dropped the second set 6-7. The match went into a tiebreaker that Fauvre won 10-2. Fauvre has won his past three singles matches.
The Gaels will compete in one final tune up before playing in the West Coast Conference tournament. The Gaels will travel to Los Angeles to compete in the LMU Invite. While at the invite the Gaels will face off against Loyola Marymount and New Mexico State.
