Lions Suffer 4-3 Setback at Saint Mary's

April 11, 2006

Moraga, Calif. Playing its third match in as many days, Loyola Marymount dropped a tough West Coast Conference heartbreaker to Saint Mary's. The Lions (12-11, 1-4 WCC) will now return home for their final regular season match before beginning WCC Championship play.

"This was perhaps the most disappointing loss of the season," LMU Head Coach Nik DeVore said. "I really felt like we should have won this match, which was a very important one going into the WCC Championships next week."

LMU won the doubles point by securing wins at No.1 and No.3 and had all of the momentum heading into singles play.

But things changed when LMU fell at No. 1 and No. 2 to give Saint Mary's the 2-1 lead.

"I felt that our match-ups were good, but we dropped singles matches at No.1 and No.2 with very little resistance," DeVore said. "I think we were all stunned to see our top two guys go down like that. It really put a ton of pressure on the other guys at that point."

Senior Mike Chan evened the match for us with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No.6.

Saint Mary's was later able to secure the win with hard-fought three set victories at No.4 and No.5.

Shortly after that, junior Reyniere Roxas came from a set down and a break in the second to win 2-6, 6-4, 10-7 at the No.3 singles position to make the final score 4-3 in favor of Saint Mary's. Roxas finished the Nor-Cal road swing a perfect 3-0 and now stands at 17-9 overall this season.

"If everyone on our team played with the same level of consistency and determination as Reyniere, we would be in much better shape as a team at this point," DeVore said. "Reyniere is the one guy we can alwayscount on to leave everything he has on the court."

The Lions have one regular season match remaining, a home match against UC Riverside Monday, April 17, at 1:30 p.m.

"We now have to focus onour last match of the season against UC Riverside," DeVore said. "We really need this match in order to build some confidence for the WCC Championships."
