CHENEY, Wash - - The Gonzaga University men's tennis team posted a strong showing Tuesday as they defeated Eastern Washington University 5-2 in Cheney, Wash.
Gonzaga improves to 9-12 with the victory, while Eastern Washington falls to 10-8 overall.
The Zags jumped out to an early lead in doubles play. Marco Antonio Pineda and Charles Adams won the No. 3 match with Pannhara Mam and Nico Riego de Dios 8-6 to give the Zags the one-match advantage. Bryce Cooper and Roman Dojcak then battled back from an early 6-3 deficit to defeat Kevin Erickson and Kyle Schraeder 9-7.
In singles play, Brett Womack got the Bulldogs off to a good start posting a victory over Daniel Pez at the No. 3 spot (6-4, 7-6). Dojcak then came back to earn at No. 2 win over Schraeder (3-6, 6-3, 6-4). Pineda then secured the win for Gonzaga with a comeback victory over Dios. After falling 4-6 in the first set, Pineda won the second set 6-4. In the third set, the senior was down 0-3 early before coming back to take the match with a 6-4 decision in the third set. Charles Adams and Bryce Cooper also earned victories in singles play.
The Zags will return to the courts Friday when they host the University of Idaho in Spokane.
