Malibu, Calif. - No. 3 Texas defeated the No. 2 Pepperdine men's tennis team 5-2 Friday evening at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center in Austin, Texas, snapping the Waves 13-game win streak. The Longhorns improved to 16-2 on the season, while the Waves moved to 26-2 on the season.
Texas took a 1-0 lead after the doubles point went in favor of the Longhorns. No. 52 Ivor Lovrak and Pedro Rico won 8-5 at court two, but the doubles team of Callum Beale and Miguel Reyes Varela upset the No. 1 Wave duo of Andre Begemann and Scott Doerner 8-5. No. 38 Michael Venus and Travis Helgeson forced Richard Johnson and Omar Altmann to a tiebreaker at court three and won 9-8 to clinch the point.
Texas received three straight wins at courts six, five and one to give the Longhorns the win. At No. 6, Michael Venus defeated Altmann 6-0, 6-3, while Reyes Varela defeated Johnson 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5. No. 7 Helgeson defeated No. 6 Doerner 6-0 in the first set, but the Wave was still in the match after winning 6-0 in the second set. Helgeson clinched the match, however, defeating Doerner 6-1 in the third set.
No. 25 Rico put the Waves on the board as he defeated No. 36 Gubser 7-6, 7-5 at court two, while Begemann followed with a win over Milan Mihailovic in three sets. At court three, No. 39 Beale defeated No. 52 Lovrak, who suffered his first loss of the season after winning 19 straight singles matches.
The Waves conclude regular season action on Saturday, April 15 when they face No. 18 Texas A&M at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas. The first serve is set for 4 p.m. (PT). Live stats for the match are available at www.PepperdineSports.com.
