Lions Fall to Saint Mary's

April 14, 2007

LOS ANGELES - After winning four of its last five matches, Loyola Marymount men's tennis (8-13, 1-3 WCC) dropped a tough 6-1 match to West Coast Conference foe Saint Mary's (10-10, 3-5 WCC) Saturday at the LMU Tennis Center. The two conference teams are in their final weekend of the regular season before next week's WCC Championship in San Diego.

LMU dominated doubles play early, winning 8-4 at No. 3 and going up 5-2 at No. 2 and 7-5 serving for the match at No. 1. Yet, Saint Mary's fought back, winning 9-7 at No. 1 and 9-8 at No. 2.

That quickly switched the match momentum to the Gaels' favor.

"We really never recovered after that," LMU Head Coach Nik DeVore said. "It was a big disappointment today."

LMU's Nico Terrienand Sam Tadevosian competed well at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, but both lost hard-fought matches.

Jacek Twarowski was able to win at No. 3 singles in a third set tiebreaker.

The Gaels had been nationally ranked earlier in the season, but had fallen out of the top-75.

"A wintoday would have really helped us going into the WCC Tournament next week," DeVore said. "We hope to rebound tomorrow against 54th-ranked Denver."

The Lions and Pioneers will take to the courts of the LMU Tennis Center following the 9:00 a.m. match-up between New Mexico State and Saint Mary's. LiveStats will be available at www.LMULions.com for the LMU-Denver match-up. The match will mark the Lions' final regular season test of 2007.
