SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University men's tennis team won its fifth straight match Sunday as the Bulldogs defeated Whitman College 5-1 at the Spokane Racquet Club in Spokane, Wash. Whitman is ranked No. 15 in Division III.
With the victory, the Bulldogs improve to 11-12 for the season while Whitworth falls to 21-5 overall.
Saturday's match was originally scheduled to be played at the tennis courts on Gonzaga's campus but due to the weather, the match was forced to be moved indoors and was played at the Spokane Racquet Club.
The Zags won the match taking five of six singles matches. Roman Dojcak Marco Antonio Pineda, and Zack Radetzky won their respective matches in straight sets. Dojack downed Steven Ly at the No. 2 spot (6-2, 6-1), while Radetzky posted a victory over Nadeem Kassam at the No. 5 spot (6-1, 6-1). Pineda improved his overall record to 13-8 with a victory over Christoph Fuchs at the No. 4 spot (7-6, 6-3).
Bryce Cooper and Brett Womack also each posted singles wins for Gonzaga. Cooper, who posted the match winning point on Friday, defeated fourth-ranked Phalkum Mam at the No. 1 position in three sets (6-4, 5-7, 10-8). Womack earned his eighth singles victory of the season with a three-set victory over Matthew Solomon (6-4, 6-7, 10-6), play at No. 3.
The lone Whitworth point came when the Zags' Charles Adams fell to Jake Cappel (6-3, 6-1) at the No. 6 spot.
Doubles matches were not played.
The Bulldogs will hit the courts again Sunday when they host Lewis-Clark State College at the tennis courts on Gonzaga's campus. The match is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. Earlier this season the Zags defeated LCSC 7-0 as part of the Boise State University Spring Break Tournament.
