Malibu, Calif. - The No. 2 Pepperdine men's tennis team closed out its regular season with a 4-3 defeat over No. 18 Texas A&M at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas. The Waves ended the regular season with a 27-2 record, while the Aggies dropped to 15-8 on the season.
Pepperdine won the first doubles match at court two with the No. 52 duo of Pedro Rico and Ivor Lovrak defeating Marcus Lunt and Bryan Wooten 8-6. At No. 1 Brett Joelson and Jerry Makowski upset the No. 1 nationally-ranked doubles team of Scott Doerner and Andre Begemann 8-6. All eyes turned to court three where Richard Johnson and Omar Altmann were battling in the tiebreaker against Conor Pollock and Matt Bain. The Wave duo won 10-5 in the tiebreaker to clinch the doubles point.
In singles, Begemann picked up the first win, defeating John Nallon 6-3, 6-4 to put the Waves in the lead, 2-0. No. 54 Lovrak beat Wooten in straight sets 6-4, 7-5 at court three, while No. 25 Rico clinched the match after handing Pollock a 6-4, 6-4 defeat at No. 2.
The Aggies received wins at courts one, five and six. No. 8 Jerry Makowski upset No. 6 Doerner 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Johnson and Altmann were also defeated in three sets.
The Waves are back in action from April 21-23 when they compete at the West Coast Conference Championships in Moraga, Calif.
