SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Finishing the first round of the WCC Championships with a perfect score, the Pepperdine men's tennis team blew past Santa Clara University, 4-0, on Friday morning at the Degheri Tennis Center.
"The team had a great attitude and got a lot out of the match," said Pepperdine Head Coach Adam Steinberg. "I was proud of our team today ... we got off to a good start."
To keep the tournament moving once a team reaches two points in doubles and a total of four points overall, the remaining players do not complete their matches.
Clinching the doubles point for the Waves were #28 ranked Andre Begemann (Blomberg, Germany) and Omar Altmann (Cairo, Egypt) with a win over Jay Wong and Hirakawa Wong (SCU), 8-3, on the No. 1 court. Alex Moreno (Queretaro, Mexico) and Bassam Beidas defeated Justin Wong and John Iwanski (SCU), 8-2, in No. 2 doubles.
No. 3 singles Omar Altman (Cairo, Egypt), No. 4 singles Mahmoud Kamel (Paris, France) and No. 6 singles Brian Brogan, all completed their matches with wins to lead Pepperdine to a first round victory.

Santa Clara, CA - The No. 59 Saint Mary's men's tennis team earned a West Coast Conference first round victory over the Portland Pilots, 4-1. The Gaels won the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead, giving them momentum as they went into singles play. Three Saint Mary's players won their singles matches, in Joel Kusnierz, Youssef El Bouzkouri, and Achim Christner, while the remaining two matches were left unfinished due to the schedule of the championships.
It was a close battle in doubles action as both of the Gaels' wins came by scores of 8-6. Saint Mary's two spot was the first to earn the victory, as Marek Dvorak and Achim Christner topped Portland's Schleining and Domoney, 8-6. Kusnierz and Lucas Tirelli clinched the doubles point with their own 8-6 win, defeating Zivkovic and Yemm.
Kusnierz went on to make easy work of Joel Kincaid, beating the Pilot in two easy sets, 6-2, 6-0. The next Gael to post a victory was Achim Christner, recording a 6-3, 6-3 win from the No. 4 position. Rounding out the singles wins was El Bouzkouri, edging the Pilots' Yemm, 6-1, 7-6.
The Gaels will return to action in the second round of the WCC Championships, as they face San Diego in a 3:00 PM match-up at the University of Santa Clara.

Santa Clara, CA - The USD men's tennis team, the No. 2 seed at the 2008 West Coast Conference Championships, easily defeated No. 7 seed Gonzaga today, 4-0. With the win the 58th ranked Toreros improve to 11-10 on the season and will now face the winner of the No. 3 Saint Mary's-No. 6 Portland match tomorrow at 3:00 pm. USD swept the doubles matches to earn the first point, then received singles victories from Thomas Liversage at No. 1 singles, Dean Jackson at No. 2 singles and Levon Brown at No. 6 singles.

Santa Clara - USF men's tennis swept Loyola Marymount 4-0 in opening round action of the 2008 West Coast Conference Championships Friday afternoon at the Degheri Tennis Center on the Santa Clara campus. The Dons captured the doubles point and posted singles victories at Nos. 1, 3 and 5.
Thong Tu posted a dominating 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles against Jacek Twarowski, while Asaf Cohen downed Sam Tadevosian 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3. Falko Huttenberger dispatched Renzo Maggie6-1, 6-2 at the No. 5 spot.
USF now turns its focus to a Saturday morning showdown against defending champion Pepperdine. First serve against the Waves is set for 1:00 PM.
