No. 5 Men's Tennis Offs No. 4 Portland

San Diego, CA - The Saint Mary's men's tennis team entered their first competition of the WCC Championship tourney with a seeding of No. 5. They were set to face the No. 4 Portland Pilots. The Gaels and the Pilots were set to compete despite unfavorable weather conditions. The Gaels won the match by a score of 4-1. They will now advance to the top bracket in the tourney and will face No. 1 Pepperdine tomorrow.

The match got underway with singles. Joel Kusnierz led the Gaels from the top spot. He defeated Filip Zivkovic in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Senior Andre Sion took a five game singles winning streak in the WCC Tourney. Sion took the momentum into today's match as he defeated Alex Strom 7-5, 6-3.

Achim Christner gave the Gaels the third point of the match. He defeated Joel Kinciad 7-6 (7-4), 6-2. Adam Fauvre dropped his match to Kolbey Jager by a score of 6-3, 6-2.

The match was 3-1 in favor of the Gaels. Senior Yury Platonov sealed the deal for the Gaels as he defeated Charlie Yemm 6-3, 6-4.

Andrea Zannoni was in the third set of his match when the Gaels had officially won the competition. His match was concluded unfinished.

With their win today, the Gaels have clinched at least a fourth place finish in conference, their highest in recent history.

Saint Mary's will play again tomorrow against No. 1 Pepperdine. Pepperdine not only won the WCC Championship last season, but the National Championship as well. The match begins at 1:30.
