MORAGA, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's tennis team handed Santa Clara University a 4-0 loss Saturday afternoon in the semifinal competition of the WCC Championships. Due to the possibility of inclement weather, the singles competition was played first and the Toreros proved their national ranking with four straight set victories.
At No. 1 singles, 36th-ranked Pierrick Ysern easily defeated Santa Clara's Jan Macek by scores of 6-4 and 6-4. Thomas Liversage took a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Kevin McQuaid at the No. 3 spot while Ryo Sekiguchi claimed a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles. Jonas Mouly followed suit with a 6-3, 6-0 win over AJ Kerin at the No. 6 spot. The matches at No. 2 and No. 4 singles remained unfinished after the fourth point was clinched.
San Diego will now face Pepperdine, ranked second in the nation and the first seed in this weekend's tournament, Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in the championship match. Pepperdine will be looking for its 16th straight West Coast Conference crown and has claimed each team title since 1991. Leading the way for the Waves will be 5th ranked Scott Doerner, reigning WCC Player of the Year. San Diego, led by 2005 NCAA singles tournament runner-up Pierrick Ysern, looks to break through after five straight second place finishes.
