PALO ALTO, Calif. - The University of San Diego's Pierrick Ysern will advance to the second round of the NCAA Singles Championships after defeating Texas A&M's Jerry Makowski with a 6-3, 6-3 straight set victory at the Taube Tennis Center on the campus of Stanford University.
Makowski was ranked 12th nationally before falling to Ysern who ranks 42nd in the nation.
"He played well," said head coach Tom Hagedorn of Ysern. "First rounds are always tricky. He used his forehand and his serve and played good tennis."
Ysern faces either No. 56 Adrian Prpic of Texas Tech or Alabama's Joseph Jung, who ranks 61st nationally, in Thursday's second round. Earlier in the year, Ysern defeated Prpic by scores of 6-3 and 6-2 in a 4-2 Torero victory.
