WACO, Texas - The University of San Diego men's tennis team opened their 2007-08 campaign at the eighth annual H.E.B. Baylor Men's Invitational on Friday and has success.
In the first round of singles action, Jose Munoz received a bye, then proceeded to defeat Lamar University's Emmanuel Oliver in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1 and will await Stefan McKinney from New Mexico State in round three tomorrow. Dean Jackson was the second Torero to record a win as he defeated Christoph from Rice, 6-2, 6-7, 7-6. Jackson then went on to down Ole Miss' Jonas Bereg, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 to advance to the round of 16.
Nils Schive received a bye in the first round, then fell to Jon Wiegand from the University of Texas, 6-4, 6-3. Charl Wolmarans also received a first round bye and fell to his first opponent, Hugo Taracido of Texas Tech University, in straight sets 6-3, 7-6. After receiving a first-round bye, Levon Brown was defeated in the second-round by Texas' Rook Schellenberg in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Thomas Liversage was defeated in the first round by Adrian Simon from Texas Christian, 7-6, 3-6, 7-6.
In the backdraw, Liversage picked up a straight sets win over Roman Stoisavljevic, 6-3, 6-4, then received a bye in the second round and will play tomorrow in the third round.
In doubles action, the San Diego tandem of Brown and Munoz picked up a 9-7 win over Jorge Delgado and Murlino Viotto Martins from ULL in the first round. This duo then fell in round two to Filip Zivojinovic and Vishnu from Rice. The other two doubles teams for USD of Jackson and Wolmarans and Liversage and Coetzee were defeated in the first round.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday as they continue play at the H.E.B. Baylor Men's Invitational.
