Zags Advance Three to Round of 16 In Fall Opener

CHENEY, Wash. - Three members of the Gonzaga University men's tennis team advanced to the round of 16 of the singles flight at the Red Lion Invitational hosted by Eastern Washington University Friday in Cheney, Wash.

Participating in the three-day invitational is Eastern Washington, Gonzaga, University of Idaho, Lewis and Clark State College, University of Portland and Whitworth College.

In the singles flight, Bryce Cooper, Roman Dojcak, and Marco Pineda all advanced to the third round by earning victories Friday. Cooper moves on to the round of 16 after posting a victory over Portland's Charlie Yemm (7-6, 3-6, 6-3). Cooper had a bye in the first round of singles play. Dojcak, who also had a bye in the opening round, defeated Eastern Washington's Keithan Gregg in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) to advance. Pineda defeated Montana's Alex Weinstein (6-2, 6-2) in the first round en route to a win over Brian Garfield (6-4, 6-3) of Eastern in the second round.

Charles Adams and Zack Radetzky both won first round matches to move on to the round of 34, but fell in the second round, as did GU's Brett Womack. Womack earned a bye in the first round.

Also competing in the singles flight for Gonzaga was Cooper Fratt, Michael Lukomski, Mike Merz and Logan Napolsky,

In doubles play, the GU duo of Cooper and Womack, who were awarded a bye in the first round, advanced to the quarterfinals with an 8-3 victory over Eastern's Kyle Cruzat and Gregg in the second round.

Also competing in the second round was Gonzaga's Pineda and Radetzky, as well as Dojack and Napolksy, but neither team was able to advance to the quarterfinals. Pineda and Radetzky posted an 8-1 victory against Idaho's Josh Steele and Michael Manser in the opening round before falling to the Vandals' John Heib and Anthony Karlovic (8-6) in the second round. Dojcak and Napolsky advanced to the second round with an 8-4 win over Eastern's Jonathan Davis and Kevin Erickson before falling to Montana's Felipe Raw and Stuart Wing (8-4).

Falling in the first round of the doubles flight were the Zags' duo of Adams and Fratt as well as the duo of Merz and Lukomski.

The Bulldogs will hit the courts again Saturday in the second day of the Red Lion Invitational. Doubles play is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., with singles slated to start at Noon.
