Malibu, Calif. - Loyola Marymount senior Reyniere Roxas advanced to the quarterfinals of the Wilson/ITA Regionals after his opponent, the tournament's fifth-seed Haythem Abid of UCLA, was forced to retire from their round of 16 match due to injury. Roxas will play his quarterfinal match Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Pepperdine.
Roxas had previously defeated No.8 seed Gary Sacks of USC and UC Riverside's Mark Contreras to advance to the round of 16. Roxas' drive through the draw marks the first time a Lion has advanced to the quarterfinal round in singles at the ITA Regional, which features many of the nation's top teams.
Roxas will next face off against fourth-seeded and 64th-ranked Chris Groh of San Diego State.
Fellow senior Matt Phillips also advanced to Saturday with solid back-to-back performancesin the consolation rounds. Phillips started the day with a grueling7-6,0-6,10-5 victory over San Diego's Jonus Mouly. His continued to impress in the quarterfinal round, where Phillips defeated UCLA's AndrewEklov 6-4,6-3. Phillips will next face Jarryd Cooper of USC in theconsolation semifinal round.
"Reyniere and Matt have really picked up their games this week," LMU Head Coach Nik DeVore said. "It's greatto see two of our seniors playing so well- and in one of the toughesttournaments in the country. Hopefully, they can keep things going tomorrowand pick up some more victories."
Both Roxas and Phillips play at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Pepperdine.
