Malibu, Calif. - Playing in their first tournament as a Wave on the Pepperdine men's tennis team, freshmen Bassam Beidas and James Lemke each defeated a ranked player in the first day of action at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup held at the Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
In the first round of singles play, Beidas defeated No. 91 Jason McNaughton of USC, 6-2, 6-3, while Lemke put away McNaughton's teammate Adam Loucks 7-6, 4-6, 6-1. To advance to the quarterfinals, Beidas defeated Stanford's Richard Wire 6-3, 6-1, while Lemke came up with a big win when he defeated No. 18 Mathieu Dehaine of UCLA in three sets-4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The freshmen will resume action tomorrow at 9 a.m. when they pair up for a doubles match against USC's Loucks and Garrett Snyder. Singles matches will be played at 10 a.m.
Senior Richard Johnson came up with a first round, three-set win over Whit Livingston of USC, but fell to No. 17 Michal Kokta of Baylor in the second round.
