Beverly Hills, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's tennis team's national championship victory over Georgia last May was named one of Southern California's top sports moments at the Greatest Moments in Sports Awards Show, presented by the Los Angeles Sports Council.
Pepperdine's first-ever national championship was recognized at a star-studded awards presentation held Sunday night at the Beverly Hills Hilton in Beverly Hills. The show was televised live on FSN Prime Ticket and co-emceed by FSN's Bill Macdonald and Petros Papadakis.
The award came in the category of "Other Division I Schools" that excludes UCLA and USC, who had their own categories, and was determined by on-line fan balloting conducted by the L.A. Sports Council on its website, www.lasports.org. Voting took place from Dec. 18 thru January 8 and approximately 10,000 ballots were cast.
The Pepperdine men's tennis team was nominated with the UC Irvine men's volleyball team's 21-consecutive game match win streak en route to finishing second at the NCAA Championships and the Long Beach State men's basketball team's 75-73 last-second win over UC Irvine in the Big West Conference Tournament semi-finals.
Capping a 36-2 season, Pepperdine claimed its first national championship and head coach Adam Steinberg was named National Coach of the Year as the Waves avenged their only two losses of the season by defeating Texas and Georgia in the national semifinals and finals, respectively, at Stanford.
