SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- The West Coast Conference men's tennis season has officially begun. No. 50 Santa Clara is off to a solid start with two wins to start 2012. No. 27 San Diego and Portland each picked up one win, while Gonzaga tallied three wins in four matches during the team's trip to Hawai'i.

QUICK HITS

  • Five of the nine WCC teams are ranked in this week's ITA National Rankings: No. 12 Pepperdine, No. 27 San Diego, #49 BYU, #50 Santa Clara and #64 Saint Mary's.

  • The WCC men's tennis season was set to officially start last week. Some teams were able to get matches in, while Pepperdine and San Francisco will have to wait until this week to get things going due to previously scheduled matches being cancelled due to rain.

  • Santa Clara and Gonzaga are both off to strong starts with the Broncos blanking UC Santa Cruz and UC Davis and the Zags picking up three wins on the road in Hawai'i.

  • No. 27-ranked San Diego kicked off the season with a dramatic 4-2 win over No. 47 Cal Poly. Freshman Andrew Raphaelson earned the clinching singles victory when he battled back from trailing 5-1 in the third set to collect six consecutive points for the 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 win.

  • The WCC preseason poll will be released on Thursday, January 26. Head coaches were asked to predict how the other teams in the WCC would finish this season along with six singles players (not on their own team) that they felt deserving of preseason all-conference recognition.

  • Three teams will participate in the ITA-Kickoff Weekend this weekend. BYU and Pepperdine will compete in Malibu, CA at the Waves' Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. San Diego will travel to Berkeley, CA, and Santa Clara will head over to Palo Alto, CA.
