(San Diego, CA) - The USD men's tennis team opens up its 2008 schedule this Saturday, January 26th, on the road at No. 6 USC. The match will begin at 12 p.m. at Marks Stadium. With 12th-year head coach Tom Hagedorn sitting out the spring schedule while he continues to get better and stronger each day with his recovery from leukemia, the Toreros will be under the direction of interim head coach David Anderton. The Toreros enter the season with a national ranking of 75th with two players ranked in the top-75. Senior Thomas Liversage (Johannesburg, South Africa) is ranked 29th in the nation following his strong fall season in which he recorded a record of 9-4. The lineup will be bolstered by freshman Dean Jackson (Soest, Germany) who is ranked 63rd in the nation after an excellent fall campaign which saw him go 11-2.
Besides Liversage, the Toreros return three other players from last year's squad that finished 2nd at the West Coast Conference - junior Chris Coetzee (Durban, South Africa), junior Carl Wolmarans (Capetown, South Africa) and sophomore Levon Brown (Calgary, Alberta). USD's 2007-08 roster truly has an international flavor with no player being from the United States. First year freshman Dean Jackson is joined by four other freshmen - Nils Schive (Oslo, Norway), Jose Manuel Munoz (Mexico City, Mexico), Tamer Antabi (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia) and Akshay Bajoria (Kolkata, India). The Toreros first home match will be on Saturday, February 2nd, against the Fresno State Bulldogs. The match will begin at 12:30 pm at the USD West Courts.
