Moraga, CA -- The Saint Mary's men's tennis team earned the national ranking of No. 58 today. This marks the first time in program history that the team has been ranked. After coming close in years past the ITA announced Tuesday that Saint Mary's had warranted its first ever national ranking.
The Gaels merited this honor after impressive matches against the Arizona University and University of California. Although the Gaels fell to Cal, who bears a ranking of 18, they upset Arizona 4-1. This victory caused the Gaels to leapfrog Arizona, whose ranking fell from 48 to 61.
"It has been a great performance this year" said head coach Michael Wayman. "It's a great position for the program to find itself in."
The ITA ranks the top 75 collegiate teams in the nation. Next Tuesday the ITA will announce its Individual Player Rankings.
