Men's Tennis Impressive in 6-1 Win over No. 70 UCSB

Feb. 11, 2007

EUGENE, Ore. --- The University of Portland men's tennis team started strong and didn't look back Saturday evening, cruising past No. 70 UC Santa Barbara 6-1. Portland improves to 3-2 on the season, while UCSB drops to 1-4.

"This was our best full match in nearly two years," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "We played really well from the start of the doubles all the way through. There was not one player that did not come to play tonight."

The Pilots dominated doubles, earning the point with wins of 8-6, 8-4, and 8-5.

Portland controlled the singles matches as well, earning four straight-set victories and their lone loss coming in a tiebreaker.

"Though Alex Strom was our sole loss at No. 2 singles, he had his best performance of the year," Gross said. "He competed like I know he can and gave himself every chance to win against a very solid opponent. Plus, he played great doubles for the second straight night."

Freshman Filip Zivkovic continued his impressive start to the season with a 7-6, 6-1 win at No. 1 over Bijan Hijazi. Senior Colby Jager then came from behind to beat Anders Dalskov at No. 3, 3-6, 7-6, 10-5.

"It was also a special night for Colby," Gross added. "Winning his last match in the UO facility and being a Corvallis native meant a lot to him. Plus, he beat a guy who had handled him easily two years ago. Tonight showed how far some of the players in our program have come."

The Pilots wrapped up the win with straight set wins at the No. 4, 5, and 6 positions. Joel Kincaid defeated Max Taylor (6-1, 6-3), Charlie Yemm beat Josh Finkelstein (6-2, 6-3) and Evan Schleining discarded Nigel Barton (6-4, 6-2).

The Pilots return to action on Friday at Washington at 4 p.m. The Huskies are currently ranked No. 17 nationally and are 6-1 on the season.
