Pepperdine vs. Notre Dame on Friday
The No. 10-ranked Pepperdine men's tennis team garnered the ninth seed for the 2007 USTA/ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championship which is hosted by the University of Illinois at the Midtown Tennis Center in Chicago from Feb. 16-19. Pepperdine will meet eighth-seeded Notre Dame in the opening round on Fri., Feb. 16 at 10 a.m. (PT).
Top-ranked and defending indoor champion Georgia claimed the No. 1 seed, while Ohio State, UCLA, Virginia and Mississippi rounded out the Top 5 seeds, respectively. The field also includes Baylor, Boise State, Duke, Miami, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, Pennsylvania, Stanford, Texas, Virginia and host Illinois.
The Waves own a 6-1 record heading into Friday's action. Pepperdine kicked off the 2007 season on the road and fell to then-No. 5 Illinois, 4-3, in the season opener, but rebounded with a 7-0 shutout over Northwestern. Since the season-opening road trip, the Waves have posted five straight wins. Junior Andre Begemann leads the Waves at No. 1 singles position and is ranked No. 33. Senior Richard Johnson and sophomore Omar Altmann lead doubles at the No. 1 spot and are 6-1 on the season.
About Notre Dame
The Irish hold a 6-1 record and is appearing in the tournament for the first time since the 2002 season. Notre Dame also lost in its season opener, falling 6-1, to Virginia, but have since posted six consecutive victories, including big wins over Duke and Florida State.
Friday's match will mark the second time that Pepperdine and Notre Dame will meet in the National Team Indoor Championships. The Irish defeated Pepperdine, 4-3, in the opening round of the 2002 season. The Waves hold a slight edge over the Irish with a 2-1 all-time record.
