SAN BRUNO, Calif. -University of San Diego sophomore Filip Vittek has been named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week in the sport of men's tennis, the league office announced Wednesday.
Vittek went 1-0 to lead the No. 35 Toreros to its first conference win of the season this past weekend over University of Pacific. In singles play, No. 83 Vittek clinched the win for USD after defeating Tigers' Sem Verbeek 7-5, 6-2. Both players were recently named to the All-WCC Preseason team.
Vittek paired with junior Jordan Angus for a close win over Pacific's Miguel Diaz and Jose Chamba by 8-7(4) score.
For the season, Vittek is a combined 13-4 overall, including a 7-1 mark in his last 10 singles matches, and is 10-7 in doubles play. In dual action, Vittek is a perfect 6-0 with five wins at No. 2 singles and one win in the No. 1 spot, and is 5-0 in doubles competition.
A native of Trnava, Slovakia, this is Vittek's first singles career weekly honor, as he was recognized by the league as the WCC Player of the Week in doubles play with Clarke Spinosa on April 22, 2014.
