WCC Men's Tennis Conference Play Underway

SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- The 2013 WCC Men's Tennis Conference season is officially underway. BYU and Portland are atop the standings at 1-0, while Santa Clara and Gonzaga are 0-1. Conference play picks up again on Friday, March 1 when Santa Clara visits Saint Mary's.

WCC QUICK HITS

  • Conference play kicked off on February 9 with then-No. 37 Santa Clara visiting then-No. 50 BYU. The Cougars upset the Broncos in a thrilling 4-3 match that came down to the wire. After SCU claimed the doubles point, BYU stormed back, earning four singles matches, including a win by BYU ace Patrick Kawka over No. 65 John Lamble from Santa Clara.

  • Conference play continued on February 16 with Northwest rivals Portland and Gonzaga facing off in Spokane. The Pilots claimed a gutsy victory as senior Jackson Martin clinched the winning point, extending his personal winning streak to seven matches. After taking the doubles point, Michel HuKwo and Justin Guay also earned singles victories for the Pilots.

  • Pepperdine competed in the ITA National Indoor Championship this past weekend by virtue of its winning play during the ITA Kickoff weekend in January. The Waves defeated No. 11 Florida in the opening match, 4-1, before falling to No. 4 Ohio State, 4-0. In the consolation match, the Waves suffered a 4-1 loss to No. 9 Duke.

  • San Diego recently played host to Arizona, and promptly handed the Wildcats their first loss of the season. Torero sophomore Ciaran Fitzgerald clinched the match after his 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles. San Diego clinched the doubles point, while Thibaut Visy and Victor Pugliese also earned singles victories.
