SAN BRUNO, Calif. -Loyola Marymount University freshman Errol Smith has been named the West Coast Conference Singles Player of the Week, while San Francisco's Bernardo Saraiva and Nils Skajaa claim doubles weekly honor in the sport of men's tennis, the league announced Tuesday.
Last week, Smith went 2-0 in the Lions team losses to Fresno State and No. 48 Pepperdine by identical score of 4-3. Playing in the No. 1 flight, Smith clinched a 6-2, 6-2 straight set win over the Bulldogs Euan McIntosh, while three sets were needed to defeat Pepperdine's top player and No. 48 Stefan Menichella 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) for the win. So far this season, Smith sports a combined 7-4 overall record, including a 5-1 mark in his last six singles matches, and is 6-3 in doubles play. The Los Angeles, Calif., native earn his first singles career weekly distinction.
Entering their fourth season as doubles partners, Bernardo Saraiva and Nils Skajaa currently sit undefeated this spring with a perfect 4-0 winning ledger. Last week, the double act led San Francisco to an upset win over No. 70 UC Davis by a 4-3 outcome. The Dons snapped the Aggies six-match winning streak with No. 31 doubles tandem of Saraiva and Skajaa clinched the doubles point with a win over Alex Adamson and Adam Levie 6-3 to level the Dons overall record to 3-3. The pair earns their first doubles career weekly honor.
