Malibu, Calif. - Six Pepperdine student-athletes were selected as West Coast Conference (WCC) "Players of the Month" for February, the conference announced on Sunday. Baseball players Chase d'Arnaud and Barry Enright, women's golfer Misun Cho, men's tennis player Andre Begemann and the doubles team of Omar Altmann and Richard Johnson were honored in their respective sports.
The following is capsule of each players' accomplishments during February:
Baseball Player of the Month
Chase d'Arnaud - Chase d'Arnaud was honored after leading the Waves to an 11-3 start to the season. The sophomore compiled a .415 batting average for the month, scoring 11 runs on 22 hits. The Long Beach, CA native was third in the conference with 16 RBI and his six RBI against UC Irvine on February 27 is the most by a WCC player this season. The Waves' third baseman had his first career two-home run game against the Anteaters. d'Arnaud was efficient at the plate, striking out just four times in his 53 at-bats in the month of February. He had his most productive series of the month against Fresno State, going 7-for-12 with five RBI and three runs scored.
Baseball Co-Pitcher of the Month
Barry Enright - Barry Enright continued to establish himself as one of the top pitchers in the nation this season as he compiled a 4-0 record and 0.59 ERA during the month. In 30.2 innings, Enright has allowed 20 hits, three runs (two earned), walked two and struck out 15.The Stockton, CA native enjoyed one of his finest outings against then-No. 11 Wichita State, tossing 7.1 innings of shutout ball and striking out four batters to earn the win on February 16. Enright capped off the month with a complete-game effort against Fresno State on February 23, striking out three batters, surrendering three hits while throwing just 82 pitches. He ended the month with a 21.1 consecutive scoreless innings streak. Enright shared the monthly honor with San Diego's Brian Matusz.
Men's Tennis Singles Player of the Month
Andre Begemann - Andre Begemann went 6-3 during the month of February for the Waves, playing exclusively at the No. 1 spot. The junior won five straight matches before falling to then-No. 2 ranked John Isner of Georgia, and his only other losses of the month came to opponents ranked in the top-five in the nation. Begemann recorded victories over No. 28 ranked Christian Groh of San Diego State, and upset No. 14 Stephen Bass of Notre Dame to clinch the match in a Pepperdine win. He also defeated No. 40 ranked Erling Tveit of Ole Miss in the consolation round of the National Team Indoor Championships.
Men's Doubles Team of the Month
Omar Altmann and Richard Johnson - The doubles duo of Omar Altmann and Richard Johnson notched a 5-3 record during the month of February. The Waves tandem achieved a No. 28 national ranking, and lost a narrow 8-6 decision to the top-ranked duo of John Isner and Luis Flores of Georgia.
Women's Golfer of the Month
Misun Cho - Freshman Misun Cho captured her first career tournament title, shooting a final-round 2-under par 69 to claim individual medalist honors and helping the No. 9 Pepperdine women's golf team to a victory at the prestigious Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge at the par-71, 5,912-yard Palos Verdes Golf Club. Pepperdine topped a field that included 14 teams ranked in Golfweek's top 30 poll and won the tournament for a record third time, previously capturing the event in 2003 and 2005. She followed that performance with an 11th-place showing at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational.
