WCC Conference Play Starts to Heat Up

SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- The 2013 WCC Men's Tennis Conference season continues with match-ups including San Diego at BYU on Saturday and Gonzaga and Portland at San Diego the following week.


  • Pepperdine continues to pace the WCC in the ITA rankings, coming in at No. 12 in the March 5 edition. The Waves were joined by No. 39 BYU, who continues it's climb up the poll, No. 47 San Diego and ITA ranking newcomer No. 73 Saint Mary's.

  • In recent Conference action, Santa Clara visited Saint Mary's for a Bay Area showdown. The Gaels held firm on their home court, clinching a 5-2 win over the Broncos in part to doubles victories by Seif El Sherbini/Thomas Hunt and Jesse Kiuru/Joakim Norstrom. Meanwhile, Broncos ace John Lamble earned the victory playing at the No. 1 singles position.

  • San Francisco is currently riding a four-match win streak, with victories over Sacramento State, UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, and Nevada. Leading the Dons strong play has been senior Thai Tu, who has accumulated a 5-1 record at No. 1 singles. The Dons play host to Saint Mary's later this afternoon.

  • San Diego has also found success in recent weeks with victories over then-No. 39 Boise State and then-No. 57 Rice. The Toreros posted a 5-2 victory over the Broncos, courtesy of five singles wins. San Diego then posted a perfect 7-0 sweep against Rice. The Toreros first Conference match takes place in Provo on March 9, as they face off with WCC co-leader BYU.
